Cheerios and Ziploc Team Up on Resealable Bags Inside Cereal Boxes

Cheerios is giving cereal eaters a new way to close the bag after breakfast. General Mills and Ziploc announced Tuesday that original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios will be offered with a resealable Ziploc PantrySeal bag inside the familiar cardboard box.

The new packaging option is launching exclusively on Walmart.com on October 27, with a rollout to retailers nationwide planned in the coming months. The announcement does not mean every box of Cheerios on store shelves has already switched to the new bag.

A seal and a pouring opening

The bag opens only partway across the top, creating a pouring opening, then seals shut again inside the box. The companies say the design is intended to make pouring easier and help cereal stay fresh longer. They did not give a measured number of extra days of freshness in the announcement.

The companies describe it as the first resealable bag inside a traditional cereal box. That claim is narrower than saying it is the first resealable cereal packaging of any kind.

Same cereal, a new packaging option

General Mills says the cereal itself is unchanged. The new packaging is being produced in Buffalo, New York, where Cheerios was first made in 1941. The companies said they developed the seal to work at a production scale of nearly one box of Cheerios per second.

The launch follows years of customer requests for an easier way to reseal cereal bags, according to General Mills. Consumers have long folded, rolled or clipped the inner bag, or moved the cereal into a separate container.
