A residential cruise ship on a years-long journey around the world has suspended operations in Cambodia as its operator confronts a sharp increase in fuel costs.

Villa Vie Residences said the Villa Vie Odyssey’s operating model had come under unsustainable financial pressure. Monthly fuel costs that historically averaged about $1,800 per cabin had recently reached an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia, according to the company.
The operator said it had slowed its itinerary and spent more time in port to reduce fuel use, but those changes had not been enough to cover the increase. It said passing the full cost on to residents was not realistic.
The company is working with residents on disembarkation and temporary living arrangements. The BBC reported that around 200 passengers were aboard when they were told to disembark in Sihanoukville.
Villa Vie Residences plans to work on restructuring and recapitalization over the next 60 days. It said no financing or transaction had been finalized and warned that no outcome was assured.
The Odyssey left Belfast in October 2024 for a continuous voyage around the world. The suspension does not come with a confirmed date for passenger operations to resume.
