A 31-year-old man was arrested after red paint was sprayed across engraved memorial panels at the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan on Monday evening, according to police.
Port Authority Police said memorial staff notified them around 5 p.m. that an individual had been detained in connection with vandalism on the north side of the North Pool. The man was transferred to Manhattan Central Booking and faces charges of criminal mischief and making graffiti.
The paint covered portions of the bronze panels bearing victims’ names. A visitor from Britain told CBS New York that police responded within about a minute after he saw someone spraying red paint over the names.
The memorial said security staff and law enforcement quickly addressed the incident and immediately restored the affected area. CBS New York reported that the graffiti had been removed and there was no permanent damage.
The memorial honors the 2,983 people killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks and the February 26, 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The North and South Pools occupy the footprints of the Twin Towers, with victims’ names inscribed around their edges.
Details were reported by CBS New York and News 12. The charges are allegations.
