United Airlines has suspended all flights to Tel Aviv and slashed dozens of departures from Newark Liberty International Airport, as the carrier faces simultaneous crises overseas and at home.
The airline canceled service to Israel through at least May 11 after a missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels landed near Ben Gurion Airport on May 4. United had only recently resumed its Tel Aviv route after pausing flights in late 2023 following the Hamas attack. A spokesperson confirmed the current suspension is in place “out of an abundance of caution.”
Back in the U.S., United is grappling with mounting delays and cancellations at its Newark hub due to a critical shortage of air traffic controllers and an ongoing FAA systems failure. The airline has proactively cut 35 flights per day from Newark through mid-May in an attempt to reduce congestion and stabilize scheduling.
The FAA has deployed emergency supervisors to help keep traffic moving, but United CEO Scott Kirby has been vocal about the agency’s staffing and infrastructure problems, calling them “unsustainable.”
Passengers impacted by either the Tel Aviv suspension or the Newark disruptions are being offered rebooking options at no additional charge. United says it’s working to restore normal operations but warns further adjustments are possible.
