The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum will open its final two redesigned galleries this fall, bringing the renovation of its Washington, D.C., building into its last phase.
“At Home in Space” is set to open Friday, October 30. “Modern Military Aviation” will follow on Wednesday, November 11, Veterans Day. The museum announced the dates Tuesday as it presented the galleries to the news media.
Life aboard a space station
“At Home in Space” explores how people have learned to live and work in orbit. Visitors will be able to walk through a mock-up of the International Space Station’s Destiny laboratory module and see objects used for scientific research and everyday life in space.
Highlights include a space shuttle main engine, a spacesuit flown in space, the experimental Robonaut 1A humanoid robot and in-flight suits worn by astronauts. Interactive displays will also let visitors test their knowledge of spaceflight.
Aviation from the Cold War to today
“Modern Military Aviation” examines how advances in aircraft, missiles and automation have changed military operations and international relations since World War II.
Aircraft on display include an F-86 Sabre, a UH-1H “Huey” helicopter and an MQ-1L Predator. The gallery also looks at the people behind the technology and the role of nuclear weapons in modern conflict and diplomacy.
The broader renovation began in 2018 and includes redesigning all 20 galleries, replacing exterior cladding and updating the building’s mechanical systems. Earlier groups of galleries reopened in 2022 and 2025, with five more opening this July.
Planning a visit
The National Mall museum is at 650 Jefferson Drive SW in Washington. Admission is free, but timed-entry passes are required. The two galleries are not yet open: visitors should plan around their separate October 30 and November 11 opening dates.
Details about the galleries and visiting are available in the museum’s announcement. Independent coverage by WUSA9 also confirmed the opening plans.
