Baruch Dayan HaEmes: Rav Yisroel Meir Kagan ZT”L, Rosh Yeshiva Of Yeshiva Toras Chaim In Denver

The Torah world is in mourning following the petira of Rav Yisroel Meir Kagan ZT”L, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Toras Chaim in Denver, Colorado, who was niftar on Monday.

Rav Kagan was a talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler ZT”L at Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood. In the mid-1960s, he left Lakewood, together with Rav Yitzchok Wasserman, to establish Yeshiva Toras Chaim in Denver. The yeshiva opened its doors in the fall of 1967.

For nearly sixty years, Rav Kagan helped lead the yeshiva, which brought serious Torah learning to the American West and drew talmidim from across the United States. The yeshiva grew over the decades, opening Denver’s first kollel in 1981 and, in 2016, completing a new dormitory. Over the years, the yeshiva produced hundreds of talmidim in Lakewood and around the world.

In the summer of 2025, the yeshiva began a transition to a new generation of roshei yeshiva, ensuring the institution would continue the path set by its founders.
