Elon Musk announced Monday that he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every kid in America next year.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” Musk wrote in a post on X early Monday.
SpaceX began trading publicly in June after the largest initial public offering in history. Its shares closed Friday at $146.03.
There are roughly 72 million children under the age of 18 in the United States, according to the Census Bureau, making the giveaway worth about $10.5 billion at current prices. Musk owns about 4.77 billion SpaceX shares, a roughly 36% stake worth close to $700 billion.
Musk did not say how the shares would be distributed, who would be eligible, or what he meant by “first of many.”
The pledge came hours after artificial intelligence company Anthropic said it would dedicate 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund, a plan Musk criticized while urging the company to distribute its shares directly to the public. In July, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said she would give a share of SpaceX stock to each of 2 million Trump Accounts.
