Two court security officers were violently attacked Monday morning during a routine screening at the Manhattan criminal courthouse, resulting in both officers being hospitalized with stab wounds.
The incident occurred near a bank of magnetometers where the officers were stationed to check visitors entering the courthouse. One officer sustained a slash wound to the face while the other was cut in the neck. Despite the severity of the injuries, both were reported to be in stable condition after being transported to a nearby hospital.
According to officials, the attacker—described as an emotionally disturbed individual—was swiftly subdued by several other court officers on site. They managed to disarm and detain the suspect just moments after the attack, preventing further harm.
Authorities revealed the suspect has a long history of legal troubles, with 18 prior arrests, many tied to drug-related offenses. The individual is also known for erratic behavior, particularly within courthouse premises, leading officials to believe the act was premeditated and potentially targeted. The suspect is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluation at Bellevue Hospital.
Security footage from the scene shows the suspect initially attempting to proceed through metal detectors before suddenly launching an assault on the officers. Law enforcement agencies are thoroughly reviewing the footage as part of their investigation.
Officials emphasized that the safety of courthouse personnel and visitors remains a top priority, and additional measures are being considered following the attack. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of courthouse security challenges and the bravery of those tasked with maintaining order.
