Airbnb Expands Into Full-Service Travel With New App Features and On-Demand Services

Airbnb has unveiled a major redesign of its app as part of a renewed push to become a full-service travel platform. The company introduced new features under a section called “Airbnb Services,” allowing users to book a range of service professionals including chefs, personal trainers, masseuses, makeup artists, and photographers—directly through the app. These offerings aim to enhance guest experiences and appeal to travelers who expect amenities typically found in hotels or resorts.

The upgrade marks a return to Airbnb’s original vision of evolving beyond simple vacation rentals into a comprehensive travel hub. This ambition was interrupted during the pandemic, when the company shifted focus to core operations. With the new rollout, Airbnb users can now create a more personalized and convenient travel itinerary without leaving the platform. Services are being launched in 100 cities globally, with plans for further expansion. Professionals offering services must undergo a screening process and meet experience and licensing requirements before being featured.

In addition to services, Airbnb is also overhauling its “Experiences” section. A new line of offerings called “Airbnb Originals” will feature exclusive local experiences curated by in-house teams. These include guided architectural tours, cooking classes, and cultural experiences that cannot be booked on competing platforms like Tripadvisor or Viator. Users will be able to connect with other participants and share moments through private message threads, enhancing the social component of their trips.

The app’s “Trips” tab is also receiving an upgrade to function more like a full-service travel planner. Once a stay is booked, the app will automatically recommend experiences and services in the surrounding area, consolidating all reservations and information into a streamlined trip timeline.

Airbnb executives view the expansion as a way to attract more users in an uncertain economic environment, noting that travelers may seek more curated, affordable experiences during tighter financial times. The platform also stands to benefit by drawing in new hosts and service providers looking to generate income. While the company has faced regulatory challenges and lawsuits in recent years, leadership believes this strategic shift could boost engagement, loyalty, and long-term growth.
